How can you improve your presentation skills?

1. Prepare your content and structure it properly.

Identify the topic, for whom it is intended, why it is intended and how it should be presented. Identify from where you can muster the contents for the presentation. Structure your contents in a proper manner having an introduction, the sections and finally the summary and conclusion.

2. Design your slides and keep the text short and simple.

The contents should find place in your power point presentations. The ppts should be prepared in such a manner that the contents and the background are in prefect contrast. (example, black in white back ground). Also provide proper format and font size which can be read easily even by the farthest participant. Stick on to points alone in ppts and avoid elaborations. Keep it short and simple. If pictures and animations are there along with the text, the pictures and animations may be placed in the bottom corners of the slide.

3. Practice well before you present.

Practice takes you nearly to perfection. Once you are done with your content, revise the same and rehearse the presentation several times before you appear before your audience.

4. Make a great appearance for the presentation, properly dressed and well groomed.

Come properly groomed and try to make your appearance really impactful. Be in your formal attire and avoid dark shades. Your dress should be neat, tidy and properly ironed.

5. The altitude of attitude should be high with involvement, interest and ready to inspire.

Have a deep passion for your presentation and get deeply involved in your presentation. Show interest in the topic and with great attitude try and inspire your audience.

6. Show enthusiasm and transfer the enthusiasm to the audience.

A presenter should have a continuous stream of enthusiasm, and should be highly energetic to create a vibrant atmosphere. Not only should the presenter be enthusiastic but he should also transfer the enthusiasm to the audience to make them also very lively during the session.

7. Know your audience, their background and expectations.

A presenter should very well know the educational level, knowledge level and skill level of the audience before he goes ahead with the presentation. The presenter should also try and find out the expectations of the audience regarding the training.

8. Exhibit your confidence through posture, gesture and facial expressions.

The presenter should exhibit a great body posture with the head erect over the shoulders. Try and avoid slouching and bending. Also try and avoid fidgets. However, maintain a pleasant facial expression and use wonderful gestures to wow the audience. The posture, gesture and facial expressions exhibit the confidence of a presenter.

9. Move and maintain eye to eye contact with audience.

The presenter should try and maintain an eye to eye contact with the audience, as he or she moves from one area of the room to another. This attempt rest assures that no member is left out in the process of participation.

10. Impress your audience with your voice. Modulate, pause and pitch your communication.

A monotonous voice will put the audience to sleep. Hence, the presenter should have a powerful voice and should modulate the voice in terms of importance and occasion. Give pause between sentences for the audience to reflect. Remember the pitch, timbre and quality of voice also does impress the audience.

11. Maintain a comfortable pace with your verbal delivery.

The pace at which you do presentation should be comfortable for the audience to listen and understand. Do not rush through and do not slog.

12. Grab the attention of the audience and build rapport.

The overall body language, the words you speak and their tone, your style of presentation, your appearance and your confidence all lets you grab the attention of the audience. Knowing the expectations of the audience and tuning your presentations in accordance with their interest helps build rapport.

13. Be an authority on the subject matter and exhibit your depth of knowledge.

Act like a subject matter expert of your domain, when you do the presentation. Hence, you will be able to lead the audience from the level of rapport to the level of trust. Once, they trust you, they will believe whatever you say. The audience will consider you with great respect if their able to understand that you have a great depth of knowledge in your domain.

14. Smile and have humour.

The quintessential skills for a presenter are the ability to smile and have humour. The audience can be brought closer with a smile. An environment of ease, comfort and harmony is established when presenters say jokes and encourage humour in their sessions. Hence, good presenters win people with their smile and humour.

15. Tell stories and ask questions.

The art of telling stories makes the audience attentive and also makes them easily get related to the content presented. Ask questions to clarify their understanding and also to seek out whether the audience is getting along with you.

16. Involve your audience, ensure their understanding and get their respect.

Involve the audience in the session by encouraging questions from their sides, conducting activities and games, coming up with spot quizzes, showing videos and allowing brain storming. Ask questions, probe, seek feedback and ensure their understanding and gain their respect.
