Breaking Our Safe Zones

Theory

We are formed and conditioned by our thoughts, perceptions, habits and
behaviour. Sometimes our (subconscious) mind falls into certain repetitive
patterns and loops, that we become very much accustomed with the routine.
Hence, we say that we are happy and good enough to do those activities which
fall within our perceived limits or routines. These perceived limits of ours within
which we feel happy and comfortable are referred to as our safe zones or comfort
zones.

These safe zones or comfort zones are merely perceptions wherein we have set
patterns which we believe as the best and comfortable and those limits beyond
which lie the painful or the impossible. Hence, it is a mindset which tells us that
we are safe and comfortable doing certain activities within certain boundaries.

These perceptions and mindset also induce certain fears within us which prevents
us from going beyond the comfort zones or breaking our safe zones. However, the
very fact is that all our great achievements in our life happen beyond our safe
zones. If we are able to overcome the fear of the unknown, we will be able to
easily cross over the comfort zone. We can overcome the fear of the unknown
and break our safe zones by shattering our patterns and pushing up our limits.

Ways to break our safe zones
1. Get information and be aware about what is outside our safe zone.
2. Pen down the frightful things that prevents us from moving from our
comfort zones.
3. Clearly find out the rewards of achieving something that lies beyond our
safe zone.
4. Now, find out if our desire to achieve is beyond the fears that pull us back.
5. Focus and aim on what we want to achieve and reduce the distraction of
fears.

6. Still, we can work out on other strategies to reduce and remove the
obstacles called fears.
7. Plan, prepare and mobilise resources to reach our aim.
8. Plan incremental changes like pushing up the limits and changing existing
patterns bit by bit, so that we can take baby steps forward.
9. Feel the discomfort, the failures in the very early stages and grow and learn
from the pain and failures.
10. Enhance our bearable capabilities, our risk appetitive, our ability to
persevere and build up our wish power and will power.
11. Stay focussed on our aims, derive motivation from the benefits of the
achievements we foresee and find no excuses.
12. Make the process a fun and start again to win even if we fail.

Story

Arjun had always lived his life inside safe walls — predictable routines, polite
conversations, and familiar places.
He worked in the same office for fifteen years, took the same route home, and
even ordered the same coffee every morning.

His colleagues often teased him gently. “You’re a man of peace, Arjun.”
He would smile faintly and say, “No… just a man who doesn’t like surprises.”

But deep inside, he knew it wasn’t peace — it was fear disguised as comfort.

One day, everything began to change.
His company announced a major restructuring, and Arjun’s department was
dissolved.
For the first time in years, the rhythm of his life stopped.

He came home that evening and sat by the window — the same window he’d
looked through every night. Outside, children were flying kites, laughing, chasing

the wind. He watched them, feeling something stir within him — envy, perhaps,
or longing.

He thought of how life had quietly passed him by — one safe day after another.
He had always chosen comfort over courage, habit over hope.

That night, he couldn’t sleep. He kept hearing his late father’s words echo in his
mind:

“A ship is safe in the harbour, son — but that’s not what ships are built for.”

The next morning, Arjun did something completely unplanned.
He packed his small backpack, took his savings, and boarded a train to the nearest
hill station.

He didn’t know why — only that he needed to breathe new air, to test the edges
of who he was.

The journey was not easy.
He stumbled while hiking, felt foolish trying to talk to strangers, and missed his
routines terribly.
But for every awkward step, something beautiful began to grow — freedom.

One afternoon, while trekking alone, he reached a cliff that opened to a vast
valley below.
The wind was wild, his heart louder. For a moment, fear returned — the same
fear that had kept him caged for years.

But this time, he smiled and whispered,

“If fear is the price of freedom, I’m willing to pay.”

He stood there for a long while, tears mingling with the wind, watching the
horizon — limitless, alive, and inviting.

When he returned home weeks later, he wasn’t the same man.
He didn’t just return with photographs — he came back with courage.

He enrolled in an online course, started a small business, and began writing his
experiences as travel essays.

Every time he hesitated, he looked at the picture of that valley and reminded
himself — growth never happens inside the comfort of walls.

Comfort zones are beautiful prisons — they keep us safe, but they also keep us
small. Every meaningful change in life begins when we dare to step beyond the
known. Fear doesn’t disappear when we act — it transforms into strength. The
courage to begin is not the absence of fear — it is the decision to walk forward in
spite of it. Because outside the walls of comfort lies the wide, wild sky —
and only those who dare to step out can truly learn to fly.
