Story

In the old town of Kanchipuram, known for its temples and timeless art, lived a
young sculptor named Vikram. He had inherited his craft from hisfather, carving
stone idols for temples and homes.

Every morning, Vikram would sit before a giant block of granite, his hammer and
chisel in hand, and begin his day long rhythm of tap… tap… tap…
The villagers often passed by his shed and said, “He’s wasting his youth hitting

rocks all day!”Vikram would only smile. “I’m not hitting rock,” he’d say softly, “I’m
freeing what’s hidden inside.”He worked with devotion and slowly, patiently,
sometimes for months on a single sculpture. While others looked for faster ways,
Vikram sought finer ones.

One day, a wealthy merchant came to him and said, “I need a statue for my new
mansion. Make it quick, I’ll pay you double!”Vikram smiled politely and replied,
“Sir, I can make you a statue in a week. But I cannot make you a masterpiece in a
week.”The merchant scoffed. “Art doesn’t feed hunger. Speed does!”He left and
gave the order to another sculptor.Weeks later, when the merchant’s statue
cracked in the sun, he returned, humbled.“Make it for me, Vikram take your
time.”

Months passed and Vikram worked in silence, chiselling through the cold
mornings and warm evenings. Every strike of his hammer was a meditation. He
studied the symmetry of the face, the texture of the folds, the shadow that fell
upon the stone. When the sculpture was finally unveiled, it looked alive, so lifelike
that people swore they could feel the deity’s calm gaze follow them and the word
spread. The temple priest himself came and bowed before the statue. “This isn’t
just art,” he said. “It’s devotion shaped by discipline.”

Years later, when apprentices came to learn from Vikram, one of them asked,
“Guruji, what’s the secret of mastery?”Vikram looked up from his stone and
smiled. “The secret,” he said, “is falling in love with repetition. Others stop when
they’re good, experts continue until even perfection bows.”He continued,
“Anyone can strike the stone. But the master listens — listens to what the stone
wants to become.”

Learning

Becoming an expert is not about knowing more, it’s about caring more. Expertise
is born from patience, discipline, and devotion, from showing up day after day,
long after excitement fades. While the world looks for shortcuts, the expert builds
depth. While others chase applause, the expert chases truth. Mastery is not a
moment; it’s a lifetime conversation between your purpose and your persistence.
And when your hands, heart, and mind work in unison, even the hardest stone
reveals its divine shape.
