Theory
Lethargy is a state in which we feel low in energy, inactive, unmotivated or
unwilling to take action. At times, it may come from tiredness or an unhealthy
routine; at other times, it may simply become a habit of postponing action.
When lethargy becomes a regular part of our life, we tend to say: “I will do it
later.” The more we postpone action, the more difficult it becomes to start. The
way out is not to wait until we feel energetic. Often, action creates energy.
Some simple ways to overcome lethargy are:
1. Get moving – walking, stretching, exercise or yoga can activate the body.
2. Start small – begin with just five minutes of the task.
3. Maintain a healthy routine – adequate sleep, healthy food and hydration
support energy.
4. Avoid prolonged inactivity – take short movement breaks during the day.
5. Create a morning routine – use the beginning of the day to energise the
mind and body.
6. Use willpower – do the necessary task even when you don’t initially feel
like doing it.
The regular exercise, healthy food, hydration and yoga can support physical
fitness, alertness and energy. Remember: Don’t wait for energy to take action.
Take action to create momentum.
Story
Ravi was always tired. He woke up late, postponed his exercise and spent
several minutes scrolling through his phone before getting out of bed. At work,
he would look at his pending tasks and say, “I’ll start after some time.” But
“some time” often became an hour.
One morning, Ravi decided to make a small change. Instead of thinking about
completing a 30-minute workout, he told himself: “I will just walk for five
minutes.” He got up and walked. After five minutes, he felt like continuing. He
walked for another fifteen minutes. The next day, he did the same. Slowly, the
five-minute beginning became a daily habit.
He also started sleeping earlier, drinking more water and taking short movement
breaks during work. A few weeks later, his colleague asked, “Ravi, you seem
much more energetic these days. What changed?” Ravi smiled and said, “I
stopped waiting to feel energetic. I started moving first.”
Learning
Lethargy often becomes stronger when we remain inactive. We do not always
need a major transformation. We need a small beginning. A five-minute walk
can become a workout. One completed task can create momentum. One
disciplined morning can become a healthy routine. The consistent morning
practices can recharge the mind, body and soul, while willpower helps us
overcome short-term resistance and move towards our goals. Start small. Start
now. Keep moving.
Activity
The 5-Minute Energy Challenge
Identify one activity that you have been postponing because of lethargy.
My activity:
Now commit to doing it for just five minutes today.
When will I start?
What will I do for five minutes?
At the end, ask yourself:
“Do I feel like continuing?”

“Well done is better than well said.”
